Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q)

Aligning Forces for Quality: the Regional Market Project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is a national program designed to assist communities improve the quality of health care within their region. Maine is one of 16 other communities selected from across the country to participate. AF4Q is led by QC in close partnership with the Maine Health Management Coalition and the Maine Quality Forum. These partners work with numerous stakeholder groups including consumers, healthcare providers, purchasers, insurers, and public health organizations. Initial funding was awarded to QC February 2007 to improve healthcare by aligning efforts within and across three areas: performance measurement & public reporting of quality data; quality improvement assistance for ambulatory care providers; and consumer engagement, with a particular focus on reducing healthcare disparities. In May 2008, QC was awarded additional 3 years of funding to expand the scope to include four additional areas: quality improvement in hospitals and other inpatient facilities, strengthen the role of nurse leaders; develop implement and use performance measures to better identify and reduce ethnic and racial disparities. During this time AF4Q has become RWJF’s signature initiative to improve the quality of care in 16 communities across the country. In May 2011, they awarded 16 communities two more years of funding to continue these efforts with the addition of payment reform and cost reduction goals.
