Health Information Exchange

HINs core function is the management of a secure electronic network, called a health information exchange, where health care providers can share medical information on their patients. Using the network, providers share information on drug allergies, prescriptions, medical conditions, and lab and test results. In emergency situations, the HIE helps to transfer and share information quickly and accurately to other providers to make a more accurate diagnose. The HIT infrastructure operated by HealthInfoNet serves as a critical infrastructure for transformational improvements in statewide population health, healthcare outcomes, patient safety, access, and expanded engagement of consumers in their healthcare management, while reducing the growth of healthcare expenditures. HIN is exploring several additional uses for the exchange: care coordinator alerts to follow up with a patient to determine that the right level of care was delivered and is being coordinated after a visit to the emergency room; medical image archive to store test results associated with a patients record.
